my style: sneak peek fancy photoshoot fun

My baby was twelve last week. Not possible, but they tell me it is true. I surprised her this week with a trio of special friends and a fancy photoshoot and tea party! I will share more photos later, but could not resist this one sneek peek. Baubles, bubbles, crowns and glitter - what could be better?

live the repurposed life: dental floss cord dispenser

Okay so this GOING GREEN thing has really made me look at everything differently. You know it is addictive when you can't throw away your empty dental floss container. After a closer look inside I realized I could recycle the container by rewinding thin cord, baker's twine or waxed thread around the existing core. It turned out like this --->

It was super easy if you want to give it a whirl. Easy step by step directions follow. Enjoy!

I love it! Easy. Portable. Re-purposed & Recycled. Just my style! I think I will make one for all the colors of cord I have on hand. Better start flossing sixteen times a day! Here are the links for the glue dots and cording that I like to use in my projects! SULYN CLUBHOUSE CRAFTS ELASTIC CORD and GLUE DOTS BRAND GLUE DOTS.

I use these products because I like them. I was not reimbursed in any way for promoting them on my website.

on the worktable: appliques & ruffles

I never tire of ruffles as you can clearly see here. These are a few of my favorite little "toss anything you like in" bags- and I take them everywhere. You name it and I stuff it into these bags.

I recently was creating a few new bags for a magazine submission when I had an idea to tweak this bag a little bit...

I still wanted to keep the ruffles and silky flower, but I decided to add an appliqued word to one side of the bag. I also added some glittery tulle over the top of my stitched wool leaves and gave them a scalloped edge. The last detail I changed was the seam binding zipper pull - adding a hand dyed touch. So what do you think?

storage worth stealing: mini stamp mania

I think I am suffering from mini stamp mania these days! It started with one little set of alphabet stamps from the dollar bin. I found myself using them on everything, like this and the next thing you knew I had collected five sets - all from the dollar bin. I love the dollar bin. I love alphabet stamps. What I didn't love was how they kept falling out of the lidless box they came in -

I decided that storage was key in my studio- as it always is with me, as was re-purposing. I dug around in the closet and found a metal box that used to hold scrapbooking tools. The only other thing I needed was some scraps of heavy duty chipboard.

Arrange your stamps how you like them, inserting pieces of chipboard in between each set. This helps separate the sets as well as give the little buggers some stability. This way when you are plucking the tiny things in and out of the box the other 25 stamps don't collapse into a pile.

I just eye-balled my chipboard and trimmed it to fit. You could always glue it down, but I chose not too, in case I want to shift them around later. Now all my little mini alphabet stamps are in one easy to reach storage container- yea!

my style: vintage bling & leather

I love bling. What girl doesn't? But I love leather too - good old fashioned chunky leather. I have some everyday leather cuffs I wear that are nice and wide and simple - and by simple I mean no bling.Like these little beauties.

And then sometimes I want a little sumpin' sumpin' on my cuffs - like snazzy silky flowers

But then there are the days that I just need some good old fashioned BLING - lovely bling!

I think my leather just might be my favorite "jewel" now that I think about it. Paired with the right bauble or bling it is the perfect combination of "I can survive, I am a tough girl" and "dear me, I am feminine!" Just MY STYLE!

21 secrets: finished project 3 of 21

My third project is completed and it was so much fun! "Following the Wild Winds" with instructor Carissa Paige was endearing and inspiring. I loved her friendly chatter as we wove our way through a process that made letting go on paper easy and enlightening! Here is a peek at what I created in her class.Would you like to join in and create alongside of us? You can here! Want to see the first two projects I completed? Project 1 and Project 2. Enjoy!

currently: i am...

Currently – I am…

Missing MY SOUL MATE. It stinks that life happens as it so often does and so work keeps us apart most days and nights - literally passing like two ships. It helps a person realize how much someone matters. I am sure this phase of life, like others, will too pass - but it won't be soon enough.

Purging  MY ONLINE PHOTO FILES.  All I can say is WOW and oh yea - don't wait until you have 13, 679 photos in Photoshop to make a final purge of things unless you like the slow torture of going blind, hunched over the computer for 8 hours a day six days straight.

Wondering HOW SHE CAN BE 12. How can my baby girl be twelve this month? No, really. How did this happen? I was just tucking a tiny curl behind a tiny ear as she slept in my arms. I swear it was yesterday.

Creating NEW THINGS. I thought it was fun being one of the instructors this year- teaching  GO GREEN – part of the new 21 Secrets Workshop Series for 2013, but taking part in the other classes has been a real joy! I am learning so many new techniques and creating some beautiful projects! 2 down and 19 to go. Want to see what I have made so far? Here is a peek at Project 1 and Project 2. Want to create alongside of me? Join in here!

Offering TO HELP MY COMMUNITY. There is never enough for those in need and I don't want to see the offerings end with the Easter Season. I will continue to offer up my time and treasure, as small as it is, when I can. This week our church continues to collect food for the Green Bag Project, a program that ensures no school age child in our community goes hungry over the weekend. So tonight, more bags of needed food items are packed and ready to be dropped off tomorrow.

Waiting FOR THE TIMER TO BEEP. I wait for so many tough questions to be answered these days, but tonight I am setting those things aside to wait only for the timer to beep. The smell of these babies -  Giant Chocolate Toffee Cookies is making the wait oh-so-long.

Listening to THE HUM OF THE DRYER. For someone like me, the rythmic sound of the dryer is soothing. I find comfort in the constant drone, much like I find comfort in counting.

Focusing ON FINISHING. I am intent on finishing all of the projects that I start this year. I am not allowing myself to start only to walk away. Seriously. But what about the twelve projects leftover from last year? Surely those don't count!

Sorting THROUGH MY PAINT BOX.  Why do I insist on keeping a bottle of paint (or 500) when there is just one drop left in the bottom that won't even squeeze out of the lid? Why I ask?

Learning THAT OLD WOUNDS STILL STING. Sometimes a really old hurt can still sting like it is new. Sometimes just hearing the right phrase triggers a memory, sometimes it startles you into bone rattling sobs. This week I heard something that made a long ago tragedy feel fresh and recent. It reminded me that a part of me is still empty and sad all these years later. It reminded me to hang on tight to what we love - it can be gone in an instant. It reminded me that Heaven is the safest place and to never lose faith.

Sewing BOOKS AND BIBLE COVERS. I am loving what an old book can be transformed into. Beautiful books for art, journaling, note taking or list making. Just look at how pretty this one is. And this one too! Old quilts have been finding new uses here too, as pretty, quilted bible covers.

Loving MY LATEST READ. The River Wife. I can not put it down. I seem to gravitate to historical fiction, or dated books. I took a chance on this one at my local library and it did not let me down. It is raw and lovely and sad and just plain good.

on the worktable: bible covers

Old quilts find new life around here all the time. This week I have been working on more Bible Covers. A fresh laundering, pretty stitching and bright flowers make them unique and pretty all at once.
